PALMERSTON NORTH SPEEDWAY

MANAWATU SUPERSTOCK CHAMPS
THE MAIN EVENT WAS THE MANAWATU SUPERSTOCK CHAMPS AND IT WAS ANOTHER OVERCAST DAY/NIGHT(WOUNDER WHEN SUMMER WILL TURN UP)

22 CARS STARTED THE 1ST HEAT,I WAS EXPECTING MORE CARS BUT THE 22 THAT DID FRONT PUT ON THE BEST SUPERSTOCK RACING I HAVE SEEN THIS SESAON,THERE WERE HITS FROM THE 1ST HEAT TILL THE LAST.

THE 1ST HEAT HAD 77P WAYNE NORRIS TAKE AN EARLY LEAD WHICH HE NEVER GAVE UP.42P ROBIN DAVENPORT SPUN ON TURN 3 AND THE REDS WERE PUT ON.AFTER THE RESTART 93P JAMES SOANE HAD HIS CAR FLYING IN 2ND PLACE WITH 7P SHANE PENN,10P PETER REES AND 591P WAYNE HEMI ALL GIVING CHASE.

JUST OVER HALFWAY INTO THE 1ST HEAT 93P CAME UP BEHIND 9P BRETT HYSLOP AND HIT HIM WHICH ENDED UP SPINNING HIMSELF AND OUT OF A GOOD FINISH.9P THEN HAD A GO AT 7P,64P KEV SMITH GOT SPUN AND LOST SOME PLACINGS.77P CARRIED ON FOR A GOOD WIN.

HEAT 2 HAD A BIT OF PUSHING AND SHOVING AT FIRST TURN AND 10P AND 591P GOT AN EARLY LEAD.THE RACE THEN SEEMED TO SETTLE DOWN A BIT BUT NOT FOR LONG AS 9P TOOK 16B STEVE JUDE TO THE WALL AND THIS STARTED A TIT FOR TAT BATTLE FOR THE REST OF THE RACE.

93P AGAIN SHOWED GOOD SPEED BUT 9P WAS LOOKING FOR TARGETS AND HE SLOWED 93P FOR A FEW MOMENTS AT PIT CORNER.64P PUSHED 77P WIDE AT PIT CORNER AND AGAINST THE WALL,THIS WAS WHERE 77P STAYED FOR THE REST OF THE RACE AND CHAMPIONSHIP HOPES GONE.

7P GOT SPUN ASWELL AND LOST ABOUT 5 PLACINGS,591P WENT ON TO TAKE THE WIN.

HEAT 3 STARTED WITH A HISS AND A ROAR AS SPEED WAS THE THING TO DO.

77P HAD OTHER IDEAS THOUGH AS HE WAS STAYING CLOSE TO THE POLE LINE AND WAITNG AND IT WAS 64P THAT HE WAS AFTER.AS 64P WENT INTO PIT BENT 77P HAD A HUGE SWIPE AT HIM BUT HE GOT AWAY.10P THEN PUSHES 64P WIDE BUT HE COMES BACK AT THE NEXT TURN AND HAS 10P IN THE WALL HARD HALF A LAP LATER 32P GRAEME BARR TRIES TO ROLL 64P BUT ENDS UP ROLLING HIMSELF(SEE VIDEO FURTHER DOWN)AFTER ALL THE DUST SETTLES ITS 7P TAKING THE WIN IN HEAT 3.

BUT IT WAS NOT ENOUGH FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP AS 591P WAYNE HEMI 1ST FOLLOWED BUY 10P PETER REES 2ND AND A WELL DRIVEN 31P ANDY McCABE 3RD.

THIS WAS A GREAT MEETING AND THANKS TO ALL THE DRIVERS FOR PUTTING ON A FANTASTIC SHOW AND ALSO THE MANAGMENT TEAM FOR GETTING THE 3RD HEAT UNDER WAY BEFORE THAT RAIN TURNED UP WELL DONE.

Glen Eagles vs Nelson Tigers
thanks to blair for the review and photos

The fifth meeting of the season at Woodford Glen saw both the Stockcars and Superstocks on the programme along with the McCall Trophy Superstock teams race between the Christchurch Glen Eagles and the Nelson Tigers.

The teams race was first up with the teams named as follows:

Glen Eagles:                                                      Nelson Tigers:

71C Brad Rosewarne                                          81N Brendon Higgins

72C Malcolm Ngatai                                           82N Daryl Petterson

73C Shane Anderton                                           83N Ian Clayworth

74C Jason Smith                                                84N Shane Harwood

75C Aaron Rowlands                                          85N Dale Ewers

Ngatai was left on the infield for the Glen Eagles after a wire fell off the fuel pump during the warm up while Clayworth sat out for the Tigers.

Harwood was on pole and took off to lead while Rosewarne was nailed into the pit gate in turn 1 by Higgins. Ewers was then taken hard into the turn 3 and 4 wall by Smith while Rowlands collected Harwood and spun him into Smith and Ewers, this allowed Higgins to come through to the lead as the red lights were put on to remove Smith. From the restart Ewers took Rosewarne into the turn 4 wall as Higgins extended his lead and once Anderton pulled off with mechanical issues this left the home team down to 2 cars against 4 Tigers. As the laps ticked by Higgins continued to lead and was getting good protection before Rosewarne tried to get him but was put up the wall along the back straight by Petterson. The reds were then put on to try and remove Rosewarne to the infield. But instead the officials forced Petterson to move and allow Rosewarne to have all four wheels on the track and continue racing. This is contrary to general teams racing rules which allow the race to continue and gives the walled car the opportunity to remove itself under its own ability. However if the attacking car who put the defending car up the wall frees itself and drives off and leaves the parked car with it’s rollcage exposed then the reds can be thrown to remove the stationary car which would have been the case in this situation. In this instance Petterson was blocking Rosewarne’s rollcage which effectively meant that Rosewarne was the cause of the red so he should have been removed.

Higgins lead from the restart and was never troubled as he took the win while the 2 remaining Glen Eagle cars failed to read the race and continued to circulate while the Tigers ran at the opposite end of the track with half a lap in between. Rowlands finished second and chased hard to no avail with Harwood third.

Ten cars fronted for the first of the Superstock races with 46N Blair Cunningham taking 86C Mark Osbourne in the borrwed Jason Moore car to the turn 1 wall early as 1NZ Malcolm Ngatai shot to an early lead before pulling off with another reoccurrence of the earlier issue with another wire falling off the fuel pump . 81N Brendon Higgins took up the lead which he held on to taking the chequered flag from 83C Shane Anderton and Osbourne in third.

Ngatai failed to make the start as Higgins got to the front before being pushed into the wall on lap 4 in turn 4 by Osbourne who took up then assumed the lead. Osbourne went on to win the race comfortably from Harwood and Higgins.

Ngatai failed to make the grid again as only nine cars fronted for the last race. Higgins got to the front before spinning in turn 1 allowed Osbourne to go through and take the lead. Cunningham and 47C Nigel Keats who was returning for the first time this season, tangled all over the track as they jostled and pushed one another around the track. Osbourne held onto the win with Harwood second and Higgins third.

The 20+ field of Stockcars had three all action races with some big hits going in. This was highlighted by a rollover in the first race which saw 34C Jacob O’Conner spin and get underneath 9C Dean Franklin and rolled him over and back onto his wheels. 87C Cody Streeter was then put hard up the turn 1 and 2 wall as 61C Cory Abernathy won the race from 4C Steven Bishop and 44C Peter Ross.

Ross took out the second from 21C Michael Read and 14C Murray Tapp before Ross turned destroyer in the third as he rolled 38C Terry McBride along the front straight wall. 16c Leon Huddlestone nailed 41C Ben Jacobs into the start/finish wall as the hits and spins continued around them. Ross did enough to recover and finish third behind Tapp and Abernathy.
